Designing an inclusive outdoor shopping experience.

Breathing Outdoors is a sustainable outdoor clothing brand focused on durability, accessibility, and long-term use. The mobile app was designed to support thoughtful shopping decisions through a calm, visual-first experience built for everyday outdoor life.

The Challenge

Many outdoor retail apps feel cluttered, text-heavy, and promotional. Accessibility is often overlooked, and sustainability messaging lacks clarity or credibility. For a new brand, the challenge was to design a mobile experience that felt trustworthy, inclusive, and easy to navigate from the first interaction.

The Approach

The app prioritizes visual hierarchy, simplicity, and built-in accessibility. Instead of treating inclusivity and sustainability as secondary features, both were integrated directly into the core shopping experience, shaping how users browse, purchase, and care for their products.

A clear first step

The entry experience leads with imagery and structure rather than dense text. Categories, activities, and values are immediately visible, allowing users to orient themselves quickly and begin exploring with confidence.

Designed for momentum

The purchasing flow was designed to feel lightweight and predictable. Clear steps, focused calls to action, and flexible navigation help users move through checkout without friction on mobile.

Accessibility by design

Accessibility is integrated directly into the app experience. Users can personalize text, contrast, layout, motion, and interaction preferences, allowing the interface to adapt to different needs without relying solely on device settings.

Built to last

The repairs program extends the experience beyond purchase. A guided, step-by-step flow allows users to register repairs, provide details, and understand next steps, reinforcing sustainability as an ongoing relationship.
